Welcome to third grade!
My name is Adrienne Blevins and I am so excited to be teaching third grade again this year! This is my fifth year at North Charleston Elementary. I am originally from Virginia and attended James Madison University (Go Dukes!).
Third grade is a very important year at North Charleston Elementary, and I will do all I can to make sure your child is successful.
Our goal in reading this year will be to increase our comprehension skills. We will work with nonfiction, fiction, and poetry to understand cause and effect, sequencing, story elements, and main idea. Students will be able to make personal connections to texts, as well as ask and answer questions as they read. Students will work towards becoming fluent writers, who are able to write personal narratives, informational text, and begin to persuade others through their writing.
This year in math we will be exploring addition and subtraction, place value and estimation, multiplication and division, and finally, fractions and geometry. We will work together to meet all of your child's goals this year.
In social studies, we will explore South Carolina's past and present. We will learn about Native Americans, early settlers, colonists and the American Revolution, and the Civil War period in SC. We will move towards present day with the creation of government, the Industrial Revolution, and important parts of our economy.
Finally, in science we will explore concepts with hands-on activities and experiments. We will study rocks and minerals, soil, states of matter, changes in matter, sound and motion, force, physical changes to the Earth, and habitats and adaptations of plants and animals.
